Kermitt Brooks is Chief Legal Officer at The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) and leads legal, compliance, corporate governance, and government affairs for the company. He has extensive insurance industry experience in both the private and public sectors.

Prior to joining Guardian, Kermitt spent 10 years at Equitable Life Insurance Company, most recently serving as Senior Executive Director and General Counsel. In that capacity, he led the legal, regulatory, compliance and government relations function and was a member of the Management Committee of Equitable Holdings, Inc. Before being appointed General Counsel, he served as Deputy General Counsel of Equitable, where he managed an array of complex state insurance and federal securities matters.

Earlier in his career, Kermitt served as First Deputy Superintendent and Acting Superintendent for the New York State Insurance Department. He also served as Deputy Attorney General for Operations at the New York State Office of Attorney General.

He is an active board member of several industry and other non-profit organizations. He is currently Chair of the National Organization of Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Associations and Chair-Elect of the Life Insurance Council of New York and is a board member of the American Red Cross (Greater New York Region), Michigan State University Foundation, and the Insurance Federation of New York.

Kermitt received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a contributing editor of the Michigan Law Review, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from James Madison College at Michigan State University.
